The holiday season is upon us (yay!) but do you find it the most difficult time of year to stay motivated and not fall off the wagon? So much to do so little time and as a result, many of us slip into that all-or-nothing mentality that ends with “I’ll start in January”. If you can relate, keep reading.

With all of the festivities and lazy mornings coming up,  exercise and mindful eating may become less of a priority. For the fitness and goal go-ers that love feasting and having mimosas for breakfast, let’s create that healthy holiday balance.

I’ve teamed up with Sport Chek to share 4 tips to stay motivated and on track with your goals this holiday/winter.

Be Consistent: When schedules get busy and the weather gets cold, it’s easy to cut exercise and meal prepping. Keeping in tact with your fitness and health goals will actually help manage stress, digestion and physical energy (which is needed during the holidays). Your workout doesn’t have to be long or extreme, some exercise is always better than none. However, what I’ve learned is that exercising in the morning will ensure you get your workout done before other commitments get in the way AND it will kick-start your metabolism for the rest of the day.

My favourite way to ensure I get exercise is scheduling classes and/or meeting a workout buddy. Working out can be fun and social so next time you’re making plans, suggest a workout class.

Exercises to do at home: Variations of planks, squats, lunges, sit ups, mountain climbers, wall sit, and push ups.

Make it Fun: Working out doesn’t always mean going to the gym. You can get a great workout by doing festive activities such as skating, snow shoeing, sledding or offer to take the dog for a walk. Sounds fun right? This could be a great activity to do with family and friends!

Take Advantage of the Deals: Check out the holiday specials happening at gyms and studios near you. The studio you’ve always wanted to try but is a bit pricey might have a special offer on right now. A great app I use regularly to browse for new studios, promotions and schedule my classes is MindBody.

Treat Yourself: With new gear! This treat always gives me an extra pep in my step, especially while I workout. Make a Christmas wish list or simply treat yourself to the pair of leggings you’ve been eyeing down, you deserve it. Speaking of Christmas.. here are a few of my top picks from the store that has it all, Sport Chek.

adidas Original has made a huge comeback in fashion these past few years and I’m a fan. These leggings are super comfortable and can be worn at the gym or just lounging around. They are also only $40!

I have been really into the high neck tanks and I’m thrilled I own this Under Armour Tank in 2 colours! Even better, they’re on sale for $30 (get both!).

Currently, my favourite piece in my closet are these New Balance 247 Shoes. If you are looking for a comfortable pair of shoes that can be worn 24/7 (the name doesn’t lie), I highly suggest these shoes.

I have also been keeping track of my day to day progress with my new Fitbit watch – it’s amazing how these things work. It tracks every part of my day and in the end, sways me to make better choices.

Recap: Relax and enjoy time with your loved ones. You don’t have to be perfect, but don’t throw in the towel altogether because of the holidays, just try to be consistent.
